Vanquishing Inner Bullies & Reclaiming Your Creative Power

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about bullies.

Not just the obvious ones—the billionaires who hoard wealth while communities struggle, the political figures who wield power without conscience, the corporations that keep us dependent on their systems. No, I’m talking about the bullies that live in our own minds. The voices that whisper (or sometimes shout) that we’re not good enough, that we don’t belong, that what we have to say doesn’t matter. These voices have been with many of us for so long that we hardly notice them anymore, yet they shape our lives in profound ways.

In this encore episode of The Creative Genius Podcast, I revisit a conversation with Jane Dunnewold—an artist and deep thinker whose work centers on dismantling these inner bullies. She reminds us that these voices are not the truth. They are learned, programmed into us by past experiences, societal messages, and fears that aren’t really ours. And the most incredible thing? We have the power to unlearn them.

What I’ve come to realize is that just as the world outside feels increasingly chaotic, many of us are experiencing a similar internal turmoil. The external bullies mirror the ones inside. And if we want to stand against greed, injustice, and destruction, we must first reclaim our inner landscapes. Creativity is one of the most powerful ways to do this. When we create—whether it’s painting, writing, dancing, or even just doodling—we are pushing back against the voices that say we can’t. We are declaring that we belong, that we have something to say, that we matter.

So, how do we start? We start by noticing. By listening to the voices in our heads and challenging them. By sitting down with a blank page and putting something—anything—on it, just to prove to ourselves that we can. And by surrounding ourselves with others who remind us that we are not alone in this fight.

That’s why I created The Creative Genius Podcast, and why I’m inviting you to join me and a community of like-minded souls in exploring these ideas together. Because when we form small islands of sanity, when we support and uplift each other, we are creating the seeds of something bigger—a shift toward a more creative, compassionate world.
